Jonix tested by the Department of Molecular Medicine of the University of Padua

Testing a technology to verify its effectiveness against COVID-19 is a very complex process. First of all you need a laboratory that has an adequate level of safety. And in Italy they are very few. According to WHO regulations, in fact, the laboratories that handle pathogens such as viruses are divided by biosafety levels (BSL) which identify all the measures necessary to protect operators, the environment and outsiders. There are 4 biosecurity levels, based on the microbiological risk assessment: from the lowest, the 1 to the highest, the 4, which indicates the need for maximum containment, because it operates with pathogens for which no definitive cures exist yet and which they can be lethal to humans (the Ebola virus has a BSL4, for example). The COVID virus, SARS-CoV-2, requires laboratories with a biosafety level of 3 to examine pathogens with possible airborne transmission associated with serious human disease. It’s a BSL3 is also the laboratory of the Department of Molecular Medicine of the University of Padua which tested the Non Thermal Plasma technology present in the Jonix. For the test a Jonix device, suitably sized, was used in order to verify its virucidal activity, i.e. its ability to reduce infecting viral particles. The results were clear and demonstrated that our device with NTP technology has an effective antiviral activity against COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), with a reduction in viral load equal to 99.9999%.

What is Non Thermal Plasma and how does it work against viruses in the air and on surfaces? Warning: the plasma we are talking about is not blood plasma! We specify this clearly because many people, perhaps reading fast, tend to get confused. Cold plasma (non-thermal plasma or NTP) technology has nothing to do with blood plasma therapies that have been talked about a lot in recent months.

Plasma, in chemistry and physics, is an ionized gas, a gaseous mixture of electrons, ions and neutral species. Nothing strange or exotic: as the CNR explains, 99.9% of the visible matter in the Universe is in the plasma state.
Non-thermal plasma is a plasma activated by a small electric field and is capable of producing oxidizing reactive species , which in turn act on a large number of types of polluting compounds.

The heart of every Jonix device are the actuators: the generators capable of producing the non-thermal plasma, ionizing the gaseous flow. 

In very, very simple words (we tell our technicians to be lenient if we go down to earth, just to be clear!) We can say that the Jonix devices are able to activate the air of the environments in which they are positioned, developing reactive molecules that attack the polluting molecules (viruses including SARS-CoV-2, bacteria, molds or VOCs) and break them up, thus making them harmless. 

This without releasing any type of chemical substance or residue into the environment!

Jonix devices against the virus: how to best use them

On one point we peremptory: the Jonix devices are effective and we have all the evidence but must be enabled to do their job well . This means that they must be kept on constantly and correctly POSITIONED and SIZED: a very large or very polluted space (saturated with substances or due to the presence of many people) requires one or more Jonix devices of adequate power, positioned so that the air flow can spread freely.

The expectations are that the tech brands and data center operators need to continue looking for environmentally friendly cooling choices due to the money-saving potential. It is a fact that stakeholders and customers increasingly expect companies to be more sustainable whenever possible.

Researchers also point out that when companies choose more sustainable methods of cooling (such as free cooling), it’s possible to save up to 80% on cooling expenses.

Intelligence for Cooling

Data center real time monitoring and control technologies, and Artificial Intelligence (by Google) are also an important innovation when it comes to cooling a data center. It is reported that data centers use 75 percent more cooling than needed. According to, cooling a data center is there for risk management, but the amount of money spent on cooling is more than required.

Lately data-driven decision-making is a must and enables more precise operational control by providing visibility on power, thermal consumption, server health, and utilization.

For an example a global cybersecurity company that was able to raise the temperatures in its server rooms by 3°C, based on the historical temperature readings, making possible a  25% overall savings for the year on cooling.

Cross Technologies

What seems to obvious is that cooling of data center becomes a sophisticated total solution choice. There are numerous technologies, based on air or water cooling, using different sources, working with optimizing the layout, rearranging consumed energy in real time. Estimating optimal systems performance by taking advantage of various technologies, getting in consideration the local climate, landscape, water sources, push us into using cross technologies. These all works for the simple argument decision makers really care about: such as better ROI, improving PUE and lowering data centers` TCO.

Having an efficient data center it is no longer about buying high class, latest generation cooling equipment. An expertise, team that is capable of analyzing, design and customizes a total concept, based on the available information and also the future development of the data center, is what really makes a difference. Of course quality and reliability of the equipment and its maintenance should be also considered.
